How to spot and challenge a limiting belief

“I’m too old”. “I’m too young”. “I don’t have enough experience”. “People like ME can’t do things like THAT.”

If you've said one of these statements in the past, it's possible that you've got yourself a bad case of limiting beliefs. Don’t worry, you don’t need to call your doctor.

A limiting belief is a judgement about yourself that you believe to be true.

But here's the thing: they very rarely are.

Our brain thinks it's doing the right thing by keeping us safe and preventing us from future pain - thank you brain, I appreciate it - but it can also hold us back from reaching our goals and unlocking our full potential.

So here's what we're going to do:

  1. Acknowledge it: Spot the statement & consider if it could be a limiting belief

  2. Question it: What evidence is there to back it up?

  3. Flip it: What evidence contradicts it and proves it to be false?

  4. Replace it: Write yourself a new belief that is more supportive. For example, "I'm not good at public speaking" becomes "I'm working on being better at public speaking", and "I'll never be happy" becomes "I am open to receiving and creating happiness".
